A study published in Current Biology on Sept. 8, 2016, reveals that giraffes may not be one species with nine subspecies as previously thought, but rather four distinct species: northern, southern, Masai and reticulated giraffe. With reticulated giraffe as its own species, it would become one of the most endangered large mammals on the planet, with fewer than 8,700 individuals.
